It is important to know because you could actually save someone’s life by donating  blood a few times a year.

I have given blood a few and I mean few times in my life. I can’t believe I have been this selfish and not donated A LOT more. I guess I always used the excuse of a recent tattoo, well this is not the case. You can give blood if you had a recent tattoo if you are in a state that regulates tattoos. (this is a whole other blog to come, WTF not all states have tattoo regulation?!?!?) Really thought I think I was just being lazy.  So enough with excuses I am going to make it a point to donate on a regular basis.

I recenlty had a patient at work that recieved 2 units of platelets and 2 units of Packed red blood cells. The beginning of my shift she was exhausted and warn out. By morning she was actually up walking to the bathroom and getting washed up. Her response, “It’s amazing what some platelets and blood can do to someone, this is the best I have felt in a long time”.  When I got home I began to think how much this changed her life, atleast for the day.

http://www.redcross.org/donate/give   check out the American Red Cross website. It has a list of guidelines for donation and you can actually make an appointment to donate. It was super fast and easy to do. I am going November 10 at noon!

The only way to get blood products is from living donor. Did you know that 3 out 100 people donate? That is not a good precentage considering how much blood is needed out there.

Blood (whole blood)

Platelets
Every 7 days, up to 24 times / year

Please take the time and check out the site and see if you are able to go to any of the many local blood drives this month. What a great time to start giving this holiday season!
